Goldmine Pawn · Hollywood, FL

What to bring to a pawn shop (and what to leave at home)

People make the same three trips for the same reason: they arrived without the thing that would have raised the number.

Required: photo identification

A driver licence, state identification card or passport. Florida requires it for every pawn transaction, and the contract is signed and fingerprinted at the counter. There is no version of this where the ID is optional, so it is worth checking your wallet before you leave the house.

Worth bringing: anything that documents the item

Watch box and card, diamond certificate, service receipts, original purchase paperwork, the charger for a laptop or phone, the case for an instrument, the batteries for a tool kit. None of it is mandatory. All of it moves the number, sometimes considerably.

For a watch, a recent service receipt is worth as much as the box: it removes a discount the buyer would otherwise apply for an unknown service history.

Leave at home: assumptions about price

The retail price you paid is not the starting point. Neither is what a similar item is listed for online — listings are asking prices, not sale prices. The offer is built from what the item reliably resells for here, this month.

If you want a second opinion, get one. A number you can compare is worth more than a number you have to trust.

Talk to the counter

Bring the item in, or describe it first. Either way you get a number and the reasoning behind it.
