How the number is built
Gold is weighed on a certified scale and tested for karat; the arithmetic is shown to you. Diamonds are judged on the four Cs, with the certificate if you have one. Watches are identified by reference before condition and originality are considered. Electronics and tools are tested and priced on completeness.
What all four have in common is that the offer reflects what the item would resell for — not its retail tag, and not a number pulled out of the air. If you want to know which factor moved your offer, ask. It is a fair question and it should get a direct answer.
What to bring
Photo ID, the item, and anything that documents it: box, papers, certificate, service receipt, charger, case, batteries. Documentation rarely changes the category of an offer but it frequently changes the amount.
For collections and estates, photographs first are useful. They tell us whether one visit is enough or whether the house-call service makes more sense.
Sell, or borrow against it?
Selling is final and usually pays more than a loan against the same item. Borrowing keeps ownership and costs interest, but you get the piece back. The honest way to choose is to hear both numbers in one visit.
If something has family meaning, that usually settles it before the arithmetic does — and a loan is the option that keeps it in the family.
